Education & Prevention

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Benton County has a longstanding partnership with Gundersen NCPTC - Melba Shewmaker Southern Regional Training Center – NorthWest Arkansas Community College (Gundersen NCPTC).

Gundersen NCPTC provides training, technical assistance, and publications that benefit the nation. In particular the 15 southern states that are assigned to the regional center. The Regional Training Center includes mock hearing rooms, a mock court room, mock residence areas, interactive video and flexible use space.

According to First Witness, a child abuse resource center, “96 percent of child sexual abusers are people we know and trust.” Children often love and trust sexual abuse perpetrators, and in some cases, they may not be fully aware that what is happening to them is abusive, criminal, and wrong.Statistics show that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will experience some form of sexual abuse by the time they are 18. Other important information:

  • Statistics indicate less than 30 percent of parents ever talk with their kids about sexual abuse and even when they do, they rarely discuss it with kids under the age of 9.
  • Since the CAC opened in 2000, we have seen over 7,000 children. Since that time prosecution of child abuse cases has increased over 2,000 percent.
